Not so much people know that SharePoint allows for file auditing, focusing on file operations restricted to specific types of actions and specific users. If you are a SharePoint service administrator, you can easily initiate such an audit.
To start, access the Microsoft Purview administration panel and, after logging in, choose the Audit section on the left-hand side.
The next step will be to define search parameters. We need to establish:
– timeframes
– types of activities
– keywords
– user
– site name or folder to limit the search to
For the purpose of this post, I filtered the results as shown below, selecting a specific time range, a particular user, and specific operations (fileaccessed, filecopied, filedeleted, filedeletedfirststagerecyclebin, filedownloaded, filemodified, filerecycled, filerenamed, filerestored, fileuploaded).
After completion, our search will appear on the list with a completed status.
Upon accessing the search results, you will encounter a view similar to the one shown. My search is just an example, focusing on a user who doesn’t edit too many files.
In addition to these detailed on-demand statistics, we have general statistics available on the main page of the SharePoint admin center at: https://<tenantName>-admin.sharepoint.com.
These are overall statistics regarding space utilization across the entire storage.
